Capoeira Program

The Capoeira Club at LINXX Academy is part of Grupo Capoeira Brazil under the guidance of Contra Mestre Caxias of Grupo Capoeira Brazil, New York. We hold sessions 3 days a week led by Dorado; a.k.a. Evan Taylor to build the core of Capoeiristas dedicated to preserving the true philosophy and meaning of Capoeira Regional.

What is Capoeira?

Capoeira is an art form that involves movement, music, and elements of practical philosophy. One experiences the essence of Capoeira by "playing" a physical game called Jogo de Capoeira (game of Capoeira) or simply Jogo. During this ritualized combat, two capoeiristas (players of Capoeira) exchange movements of attack and defense in a constant flow while observing rituals and proper manners of the art. Both players attempt to control the space by confusing the opponent with feints and deceptive moves. During the Jogo, the capoeiristas explore their strengths and weaknesses, fears and fatigue in a sometimes frustrating, but enjoyable, challenging and constant process of personal expression, self-reflection and growth.

The spirit and energy of a Capoeira "roda" (circle), where the participants "joga" (play) is contagious. With the encouragement and guidance of Contra Mestre Caxias, we are bringing that energy to LINXX and working hard to ensure that Capoeira has a strong future here in Virginia Beach. Through self-initiated research, travel and participating in events, we hope to increase our knowledge in the art and contribute to the evolution of Capoeira. Our goal is to train Capoeira in all its aspects: as a fight, art, and culture and pass on the increasing worldwide passion for Capoeira to our LINXX family.

Contra Mestre Caxias

Caxias, a.k.a. Alex Filadelfo, has been playing Capoeira for over twenty years. As a youngster, he played Capoeira in the streets of Rio de Janeiro even before beginning and eight-year period of formal training with Mestre Bodinho. In 1983, Professor Caxias traveled to Puerto Rico to perform with the Plataforma Company. Five years later, he began training with Mestre Boneco, one of the founding mestres of Grupo Capoeira Brazil.

In June 1994, Contra Mestre Caxias moved to New York where he started that city's first Grupo Capoeira Brazil. In just eight years, his original classes of three have expanded to nearly one hundred students. As he built the group in New York, Contra Meastre Caxias also started other Capoeira Brazil groups in several US cities including here in Virginia Beach. Currently, Caxias devotes his time to teaching and performing around the world.
